A stitch in time. . . Block 42 of the circa 1931 Friendship Quilt in the Museum of the Itawamba County Historical Society



BLAYLOCK, C.D., Block 42

C.D. Blaylock was listed as Dillard Blaylock on the 1930 census of Beat 2 showing his family living on Tupelo-Kirksville Road. The family was enumerated as Dillard, 28, a farmer, wife Mertie, 27, daughter Geraldine, 11, and son, Ray, 1; mother Maggie Blaylock, 62, grandfather Williams Carothers, 91, aunt Bettie Carothers, 60, aunt Nannie Carothers, 59, and aunt Oma Carothers, 54.


According to IHS member Kermit McFerrin, C.D. Blaylock was a farmer, truck driver, and member of the Mantachie Methodist Church. He was married to Mertie White Blaylock. They had two children, Geraldine Blaylock McMillen, and Ray Blaylock. C.D. Blaylock is buried at Center Star Cemetery.


BLAYLOCK, Mirtie, Block 42

Mirtie White Blaylock, according to Kermit McFerrin, was the wife of C.D. Blaylock of Mantachie. Mirtie Blaylock is buried at Center Star Cemetery.

TAYLOR, T.B. Mr., Block 42

Thomas Taylor, farmer, age 26, is listed with wife Vera Taylor on the 1920 Mantachie census.


On the 1930 census, Thomas B. Taylor, 36, a farmer, is listed in Mantachie along Tupelo-Guntown Road. His household then consisted of wife Dewey V., 31, Thomas L., 9, Sylble J., 9, Imogene W., 4, and Nelta F., 10 months.


TAYLOR, Vera Mrs., Block 42

Dewey Vera Taylor was the wife of Thomas B. Taylor.


On the 1920 census, Mrs. Thomas Taylor is identified as 21 year-old Vera Taylor. On the 1930 census, she is identified as Dewey V. Taylor, 31, wife of Thomas B. Taylor.

WADDLE, Mr., Block 42

This may be T.A. Waddle of Mantachie. In 1900, Alonzo Waddle, 43, a farmer, and wife Dora, 33 is listed on the census along with daughters Ethel, 11, Mary, 9, Lizzie L., 7, and Bennie, 2.


On the 1910 census, this Mantachie family included T.A. Waddle, 54, wife Dora, 43, daughters Ethel, 10, Mannie, 18, L.L., 17, Benny, 12, and sons Leton, 6, Claron, 4, and Yancy, 1.


Burton-Curber lists Alonzo L. Waddle 1885 - 1961 buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Next to him is Mattie L. Waddle 1887 - 1935.

WADDLE, Mrs., Block 42

This may be Dora Waddle, wife of T.A. Waddle of Mantachie. See information listed above at Mr. Waddle.

ARMSTRONG, Graves, Block 41

Graves Armstrong was the son of James Madison Armstrong 1824 - 1900 and Rachel Paulina Riley Armstrong 1841 - 1930.


The 1880 census of Lee County shows that Graves Armstrong's parents were in District 1: the farming family consisted of James, 56, wife Rachel, 38, sons James, 29, Willie, 18, Charley, 16, Albert, 13, and Paul, 8, and daughters Mary, 23 and Sallie, 5.


The 1900 census of Richmond in Lee County lists the family as James, 76, Rachel, 48, Paul, 28, Sarah 24, and Graves Armstrong, 17.


Graves Armstrong 1882 - 1909 married Katie Inez Armstrong 1885 - 1931.


BOURLAND, Reba, Block 31

Reba Mary Dilworth Bourland 1896 - 1973, was the daughter of Benjamin W. Dilworth and Alice Kirkpatrick Dilworth. Reba Mary Dilworth Bourland had daughters Mary and Martha.


SHEFFIELD, J.E., Block 41

John E. Sheffield, husband of Willie, is listed on the 1910 census of Fawn Grove. Then he was 25 years old, a farmer; his wife Willie was 25 and they had a daughter Onida, age 4. The census image indicates that they lived on Tupelo-Mantachie Road.


The 1920 census shows the John Sheffield family within the Mantachie Precinct. John was then 37, Willie 34, daughters Onida 13 and Evelyn 5, and son Carlton Sheffield made up the family.


By 1930, John Sheffield was a merchant on Main Street, Fulton. The 1930 census included the following: John Sheffield, 46, wife Willie, 37, son Carlton, 19, and daughter Evelyne, 16.


SHEFFIELD, Willie, Block 41

According to IHS member Joe Sheffield, this is Mrs. John Sheffield.


Willie Sheffield was the wife of John E. Sheffield. On the 1910 census they were enumerated as farmers in the Fawn Grove community on Tupelo-Mantachie Road. Then John Sheffield was 25 years old, Willie was listed as 25, and daughter Onida was 4 years.


In the 1920 Mantachie census, Willie Sheffield, 34, is listed as the wife of John Sheffield, 37, along with daughters Onida, 13, Evelyn, 5, and son Carlton, 8.


On the 1930 Fulton census, the family is shown on Main Street where John Sheffield, 46, was a merchant. Willie, 37, son Carlton, 19, and daughter Evelyne, 16, were included in the household.


Her husband, John E. Sheffield, is also named on Block 41.


WADDLE, Yancy, Block 41

Yancy Waddle is listed on the 1910 census of Mantachie as a 1 year old. He was enumerated with his parents T.A. Waddle, 54, farmer, and Dora 43, sisters Ethel, 20, Mannie, 18, L.L., 17, and Benny, 12, and brothers Leton, 6 and Claron, 4.


Yansie Waddle was on the 1920 census of Oak Grove. His father's household then consisted of Lonnie Waddle, 65, Sarah Waddle, 53, Leaton, 16, Clarion, 13, and Yansie, 10.

Block 39. A Stitch in Time

HARRISON, W.A., Block 39

Willis A. Harrison, age 48, farmer of Tilden is listed on the 1920 census with wife Ida C., 38, daughters Ruby M., 16, Ruth M, 14., Maggie L., 9, and sons Fred L., 19, Tom H., 12, and John Paul Harrison, 7.


In 1930, Willis A Harrison, 59, is listed as a proprietor of a cafe in Fulton. His family resided on Wiygul Street and included wife Ida, 58, son John P., 16, daughters Ruby, 24, Lois, 18, and a lodger Jack Mix, 24, operator of a picture machine (motion picture projectionist?).


NEALY, T.H., Block 39

Information was not found to identify T.H. Nealy.


McWUTT, Sam, Block 39. The surname is usually spelled McNUTT.


Sam McNutt, 42, widower, was a farmer listed on the 1930 census of Itawamba County, Beat 2, on the Guntown-Fulton Road. Included in his household were sons Authur, 14, and James, 6, and daughters Josie, 11, and Willie, 7.


The 1920 census of Lee County, Beat 2, Saltillo-Tupelo Road, lists farmer Sam A. McNutt, 32, wife Grattress, 21, son Athur W., 4, and daughter Josie F., 7 months.


The SSI Death Index lists Samuel McNutt as born April 3, 1887, who died in Mantachie August 1972.


Kermit McFerrin states that Sam McNutt was a brick mason, a farmer, father of three children. He is buried at Center Star Cemetery.


PATE & WOOD, Block 39

According to IHS member Joe Sheffield, this is Pate and Wood, a business.


THOMASON, W.F., Block 39

Retail grocery merchant William F. Thomason, 47, is enumerated on the 1930 census of Itawamba County, Beat 2, on Guntown-Fulton Road. Included in his household was wife Mary L., 48.


WEEKS, N. Mr., Block 39

Noonon Weeks, age 30, a farmer, is listed on the 1920 census from Pleasanton. In his household are his wife Cora L, 31, and children Edward E., 11, William E., 10, Charles R., 4, and Pearl A., 3.


In 1930, Noonan Weeks, 40, a salesman in a general store, is listed in Beat 1 on Highway 25. His household included wife Cora L., 41, sons Elmer W., 20, Charles R., 14, daughter Pearl A., 12, and lodger Homer Blalock, 25.


WEEKS, N. Mrs., Block 39

Mrs. Noonon Weeks is identified as Cora L. Weeks, age 31, on the 1920 census of Pleasanton Precinct of Itawamba County. Mr. and Mrs. Weeks had three sons, Edward E., William E., Charles R., and one daughter, Pearl A. at that time. See information at Mr. N. Weeks.


Cora L. Weeks, 41, is listed as the wife of Noonan Weeks on the 1930 census. See information at Mr. N. Weeks above.


WOOD, Walter, Block 39

Walter Wood is listed in the 1920 census of Itawamba County, Beat 2. He was age 43, a farmer, with wife Ethel, 33, sons Dewey H., 21, Belmont H., 18, Elvie M., 10, William D., 4, and daughter Corlie L., 10.


By 1930 that household was enumerated in Beat 3 along Dorsey-Cardsville Road to include Walter Wood, 54, Ethel L., 43, and sons Elvie M., 23, Lamar W.D., 14, and Walter D., 9.


A second Walter Wood is also listed on the 1930 census. Merchant and general store operator Walter Wood, 54, is noted in Fulton on Main Street with his family Lucindia, 54, Jewell, 20, Guy, 15, and Joe A., 4 months.

FARRAR, Clinton, Block 38

On the 1930 census of Beat 2, Herman C. Farrar, 27, is enumerated as a truck driver for a milk company along with wife Joesie I. 23, daughters Willie M., 5, Mary R., 3, and son Paul W., 2.


According to Kermit McFerrin, Clinton Farrar was a farmer, an auto-mechanic, and a truck driver. He is buried at Center Star Cemetery.


FARRAR, Irene, Block 38

Jossie Irene McNutt Farrar was the wife of Herman Clinton Farrar.

Kermit McFerrin states that Irene McNutt Farrar worked in the Tupelo Hospital in the nursery for several years during the 1950s-60s. She was the mother of three: Willie Mae Farrar, Mary Ruth Farrar, and Paul Wayne Farrar.


McNUTT, Roy, Block 38

Roy McNutt, 2 year old son of William A and Lessie McNutt, was named on the 1920 census of Mantachie.


William Roy McNutt, son of William A. and Lessie A. McNutt was born 1917 and died in 1936. He is buried at Stephens Cemetery next to his father according to Burton-Cruber.


McNUTT, W.A., Block 38

William A. McNutt is listed on the 1910 and 1920 census of Mantachie as a farmer. In 1910 his household consisted of W.A. McNutt, 35, wife Lessie, 23, and daughter Irene. They were enumerated as living along the Cotton Gin-Aberdeen Road.


In 1920, William A. McNutt, 45, wife Lessie, 33, daughters Jessie, 13 and Winnie, 9, and son Roy McNutt, 2, were named.


The 1930 census lists the family as William A. McNutt, 54, wife Almeda, 42, and son William Roy, 13.


W.A. McNutt 1878 - 1959 is buried at Stephens Cemetery next to son William Roy McNutt.

GRISSOM, James, Block 37

Son of Al and Donie Grissom, James W. is listed on the 1920 census as being 4 months old. Included with him are his parents, sister Pauline, and brother Horace and Morris E. Grissom. On the 1930 census, James, 10, was enumerated with his family at Mantachie.


Like his father, James Grissom also served as a mail carrier for several years in the Mantachie area. A veteran of World War 2, James Grissom married Etoyle Comer.


James Grissom is listed on the SSI Death Index as born August 24, 1919. His lived in Mantachie --- and there he died in August 1987. He is buried in Mantachie Cemetery.

SHEFFIELD, Evelyn Mrs., Block 37

According to IHS member Joe Sheffield, Evelyn Sheffield was an elementary school teacher in Itawamba County.


No additional information was found on Mrs. Evelyn Sheffield.


SHEFFIELD, Sula, Miss, Block 37

Sula B. Sheffield, 32, is found on the 1930 census, Beat 2, Guntown-Fulton Road, in the household of her brother, Shelby Sheffield, 31, a farmer, and his wife Blanch, 24.


Sula Bell Sheffield, 23, is listed on the 1920 census of Mantachie in the household of her father, Jessie Sheffield, 59, a farmer. Other included in the household were Sula's mother, Mallie, 55, and five brothers: Dee, 35, Dorsey, 25, Shelby, 21, Gorden, 18, and Ezell, 16.

S.B. Sheffield, 12, is listed on the 1910 census of Fawn Grove in the household of her parents W.J. Sheffield and Mallie Sheffield and five brothers.


WATSON, Verna Mrs., Block 37

Verna Watson, 32, is listed as the wife of John A. Watson, a farmer in Mantachie, on the 1930 census. See information at J.A. Watson, Block 05.

A stitch in time . . . The 2010 Friendship-Memory Quilt

Members of the Itawamba Historical Society continue to find circa 1930 Friendship Quilts from the county and are in the process of transcribing names from them. The quilt which is the subject of this series of articles is located in the Bonds House Museum of the Society. Friends of the Historical Society have loaned quilts so that the names can be listed and added to the body of knowledge about earlier times in Itawamba County, Mississippi. If you have such a quilt from Itawamba County, won't you please consider loaning it to the Society so that the names from it can be transcribed?

You also have a unique opportunity to have your names recorded on a new Friendship Quilt as the Society is currently in the process of producing one for 2010. Before the quilt is raffled to some lucky winner, the names of the new quilt will be transcribed and listed with family information in the files of the Historical Society for future reference.

Subscribe to the friendship quilt project today. Add your name and the names of your family to the quilt for a donation of $10 per name. One hundred per cent of the donations from the quilt project will go directly to the non-profit Itawamba Historical Society to further its work in preserving and promoting the history of our region.

Block 35. A Stitch in Time

A stitch in time. . . Block 35 of the circa 1931 Friendship Quilt in the Museum of the Itawamba County Historical Society

ARMSTRONG, A.S. Mr., Block 35

Alva S. Armstrong, 29 year-old farmer, is recorded on the 1920 census of Itawamba County, Beat 3. His household consisted of wife Minnie S., 21, son Escar S., 4, and daughter Mary K., five months.


The 1930 census lists the family in Beat 2 on Settlement Road as composed of Alver S. Armstrong, 39, a farmer, wife Minnie M., 32, and children Esker L., 15, Mary K., 10, and Florence, 2.


According to IHS member Kermit McFerrin, Alva S. Armstrong owned the Bonds House (now the Museum of the Itawamba Historical Society in Mantachie) for several years. Mr. Armstrong was a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Mantachie. He is buried at Center Star Cemetery.


ARMSTRONG, A.S. Mrs., Block 35

Minnie S. Armstrong was the wife of Alva S. Armstrong. See 1920 and 1930 census information in the entry for Mr. A.S. Armstrong.


Kermit McFerrin states that Minnie S. Turman Armstrong was a Sunday school teacher at the Mantachie First Baptist Church for several years; that she worked for Reed's Garment Company; and that she and Alva S. Armstrong had three children: Escar Armstrong, Mary Kate Armstrong Sheffield, and Nell Armstrong Trammel. Minnie S. Armstrong is buried at Center Star Cemetery.


TURMAN, M.B. Mr., Block 35

M.B. Turman is listed as Marcus B Turman on the 1920 census and as Martin B. Turman on the 1910 census. Mr. Turman was a farmer and married to Florence Turman. In their 1910 household at Greenwood, Beat 4, Itawamba County, Mr. Turman is listed as being 49 years old along, Florence, 45, and three daughters, Cora, 21, Minnie, 12, Lee, 7 and two sons Potter, 14, and Esca, 9.

TURMAN, M.B. Mrs., Block 35

Florence Turman is listed as the wife of Marcus/Martin B. Turman on the 1910 and 1920 census of Itawamba County. In 1910 the Turmans are listed as residing in Greenwood, Beat 4; in 1920 they were enumerated as residing in Beat 3. In 1920 the household consisted only of Florence, age 53, and Marcus B. Turman, age 69.

Ruby D. Smith was the wife of Allen Blanchard Smith.


Allen B. Smith is listed on the 1920 Oak Grove census. With him is wife Rubie Smith and two children but the census image page is unreadable for their ages or the names of the children.


The 1930 census of Beat 2 shows the family on Tupelo-Kirksville Road consisting of Allen B. Smith, 38, a farmer, wife Ruby D., 33, sons George W., 14, Charlie B., 11, and daughter Tina, 9.


CAMP, C.B., Block 34

This is probably Charlie B. Camp 1893 - 1956 who is buried at Stephens Cemetery of Itawamba County according to Burton-Cruber.


Kermit McFerrin, IHS member from Mantachie, states that C.D. Camp was a long-time educator in Itawamba County, a farmer, and a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He was his wife Delphia P. Camp had three children --- sons Herman Camp and Charles E. Camp (who was killed in World War 2), and Gladys Camp Franks.


CAMP, C.B. Mrs., Block 34

Delphia P. Camp 1896 - ___, was the wife of Charlie B. Camp. Entries for Charlie and Delphia Camp are recorded in Burton-Cruber from Stephens Cemetery.


According to Kermit McFerrin, Delphia Camp assisted Mr. Camp in school work in Itawamba County.

A stitch in time. . . Block 33 of the circa 1931 Friendship Quilt in the Museum of the Itawamba County Historical Society



PEARCE, Ronald, Block 33

This may be the Ronald R. Pearce shown on the 1930 Lee County census as a 35-year-old filling station worker who lived in the household of the manager of the filling station, Horace B. Lawhorn, 33.


PEARCE, Ruby, Block 33

Ruby Pearce, age 22, is shown on the 1920 census in the household with her parents, Dave and Francis Pearce, of Mantachie. This farming family consisted then of Dave, 56, wife Francis, 55, daughters Ruby, 22, and Mittie Jane, 16, and sons William, 27, and Marvin, 20.


Ruby E. Pearce, 32, was the daughter of David, 60, and A. Pearce 65, farmers on the Tupelo-Guntown Road. Listed on the 1930 census with her and her parents were brother Alford R., 35, and sister Nettie J., 26, a school teacher.


SANDLIN, A.E. Rev., Block 33

Augustus E. Sandlin is listed on the 1920 census of Cardsville, Beat 3, Itawamba County. Then he was 59 years old and headed a household that included his wife Margaret E., 64, daughter Allie J., 30, granddaughter Anna Nell, 8, and grandson Bradford, 6.


In 1930, Augustine E. Sandlin, 69, is listed in the household of his son-in-law, Hiram G. Pearce, 52. Others in that Itawamba County Beat 3 household on Cardsville-Tupelo Road were Ellanora M. Pearce, 47, and Arley S. Pearce, 17.


The Reverend Mr. A. E. Sandlin 1861 - 1940 and his wife Margaret Elizabeth Sandlin 1855 - 1928 are buried in Sandlin Cemetery according to Burton-Cruber.


SANDLIN, Ezra Mr., Block 33

The 1920 census of Cardsville, Beat 3, of Itawamba County includes Ezra Sandlin, age 26, farmer, and wife Mary A. Sandlin.


SANDLIN, Ezra Mrs., Block 33

Mrs. Ezra Sandlin is identified on the 1920 census of Cardsville as Mary A. Sandlin, age 21.
